Create a simple eCommerce WordPress website (on AWON) – Step by step guide

Creating an online store website on WordPress is a simple process. Please follow this step-by-step tutorial to see how you can also do it by yourself.

Install WordPress

This step is different for each web host so here we will only focus on how to start with this first step. Installing WordPress on AWON is pretty simple process. Once you are logged in you can follow this simple tutorial here https://awon.io/blog/how-to-host-wordpress-site-on-awon to install your first WordPress website.

Install theme

After you install WordPress and are logged in, you will be in the admin area. If you are not sure, just type https://YOUR_WEBSITE_DOMAIN/wp-admin

Now go to the Themes section and click on Add New button.

Next, search Blocksy in the search box then install and activate Blocsky theme.

After you activate the Blocksy theme, you will see the following notice on the Themes screen. This is asking you to install a helper plugin for the theme. Install Blocksy Companion. Click on the button and it will start installing that plugin.

After the plugin is installed you will see the following screen. You can click Skip if you wish.

After you Skip or Allow & Continue the following screen will come. Please select Starter sites tab.

Configure theme

Here you should see site templates like the following.

Click on Import button for Modern Shop template.

Go through the prompts and select as per the images.

Click Install in the end to install the theme.

Once theme is installed and content is imported you will see your online store is ready. All you need to do now is update the content.

You may get some issues

If you encounter an issue in installing the theme properly because the installation takes too long. I recommend you pre-install the WooCommerce plugins separately. To pre-install WooCommerce plugin, follow this steps:

Go to Plugins > Add New. Search for WooCommerce. Install and Activate the plugin.

Disable CDN on AWON cloud hosting

Also, just in case your plugin installation fails as sometimes it takes really long for large plugins like WooCommerce. Go to your Site > Operations > CDN

Go to the CDN setting and Disable the CDN caching to install the plugin. Enable it again after you are done.

Configure email delivery (in AWON Hosting)

Configuring email delivery from the website is an important part of the website setup.

As AWON host your website on AWS infrastructure, email hosting is something you manage separately. AWS does not allow any unauthorised emails to be sent to by any runtimes within their infrastructures. If you want to send emails from AWS, you should configure SES (Simple Email Service), which is an another subject for the context of this post.

However, you can use you existing email provider and configure their SMTP settings with your WordPress website to send emails. To do that, you will need to install another plugins. Called “WP Mail SMTP by WPForms – The Most Popular SMTP and Email Log Plugin

Go to Plugins > Add New and search for “wp mail”

Install and Activate “WP Mail SMTP by WPForms – The Most Popular SMTP and Email Log Plugin“.

Click on “Lets Get Started” and go through the setup screens.

You can skip the above step (Skip this Step) as you have installed a new website.

Next choose your email delivery provider.

Next screen will asks you to enter SMTP host and login details in case you are using Other SMTP provider.

The next screen will auto-select the email delivery features you want from this plugin.

Next screen you can skip if you wish.

The next step is the license key. If you want to use the Pro version of this plugin, you should enter the license key here provided by WP Mail. For the free version of the plugin, you can skip this step.

The next screen will test your setup and if you have made any mistakes then it will ask you to troubleshoot like the below image otherwise you can Finish Setup.
